Laser and Wood

Grain Pics began as a small project in a Detroit area fabrication studio with a laser machine and scraps of wood. Various experiments and test cutting on multiple types of wood drove the direction of what works and doesn’t.

A 150w laser is used to etch in 1.75” thick solid hard maple. This gives a nice recessed etch in a wood that shows a good contrast for the image. Various woods were tested but due to certain grains and oils, the maple ended up as being the best outcome for all the variables.

The final product is sanded and sealed with a Polyurethane or Lacquer (3 coats) for a satin finish. There is also a hole in the back of all blocks for wall hanging.
